Behavioral Health Treatments

Philosophy & Treatment

We use multiple age-appropriate treatment modalities to accomplish the following goals:

  1. Help patients stabilize their symptoms related to mental illness
  2. Help patients maintain abstinence from all addictive substances

While receiving treatment, our patients are offered weekly group therapy sessions, a psychiatric evaluation, medication monitoring, as needed, and at least one family meeting.

For more information on our philosophy and treatment or other behavioral health services available, please call 1-800-528-3425.

Crisis Services

If you need help day or night, you can go to our 24-hour crisis service, managed by Oaks Integrated Care. The center is located within the emergency department at our Cherry Hill Campus. You can go there if you are experiencing acute psychiatric symptoms and need close observation in a secure setting. It is staffed by crisis workers certified by the State of New Jersey, psychiatrists and registered nurses. As a patient, you will receive a mental health evaluation, clinical stabilization services, and will be referred to a service that can provide the most appropriate treatment.

Child & Adolescent Services - What to Expect

At Jefferson, we work hard with parents, community mental health providers and local school districts to offer safe, respectful and nurturing environments that provide our young patients the ability to develop the coping skills needed to allow for a safe return to their homes and schools. Our child and adolescent services provide a full continuum of care for young patients who can be assessed at Jefferson Behavioral Health's ACCESS Center in Cherry Hill or through one of the screening centers in Camden, Burlington or Gloucester counties. For your convenience, we have outpatient services located in Washington Township and Cherry Hill. Transportation may be provided when available.

Parents or legal guardians are asked to transport the patient on the first day of treatment. Please arrive 30 minutes prior to the start of the program. There will be some paperwork to complete, as well as some time to become more familiar with the program and the facility.

Inpatient Psychiatric Services
CAPU is our 14-bed acute inpatient unit. It offers 24-hour nursing supervision as well as psychiatric evaluation, medication evaluation, group therapy, individual therapy, family therapy, psycho-educational groups, in-house school services and medication monitoring. Patients requiring additional support are offered linkage with a variety of community services based on individual needs.

Outpatient Partial Hospitalization Program
This program helps children and adolescents faced with the challenges of mental health issues as they continue living in their home environments. Patients are required to continue to meet their baseline educational requirements as their presenting issues are addressed. Our experienced outpatient treatment team fosters an environment that promotes safe and effective alternate coping skills to prepare the child or adolescent to return to his or her community and school. Patients are also offered individual therapy and medication monitoring.

Intensive Outpatient Program & After School Program
Additionally, we offer an after-school intensive outpatient program in the evening that continues to support the patient as he or she returns to school. This program offers psycho-educational and therapeutic groups. In Cherry Hill only, there is a new program focused on helping those in the LGBTQ community.

Adult Services - What to Expect

Our adult outpatient psychiatric services are conveniently located in Cherry Hill and Washington Township. For your convenience, we provide both daytime and evening hours. When available, transportation may be provided.

On your first day, you will be introduced to the treatment program through an orientation group prior to the start of group therapy.

The treatment team consists of a psychiatrist, senior clinician, master’s-level clinicians and mental health technicians. All patients will be assigned to one master’s-level clinician on the first day of treatment. This clinician will be your primary point of contact throughout the program.

A psychiatrist is available for an initial psychiatric evaluation for all patients. Non-addictive psychiatric medications will be prescribed, as needed, and monitored by the psychiatrist. Follow-up visits will be brief and only conducted while patients are attending programs.

A family meeting will be scheduled within the first two weeks of the program. It is not a family therapy session; the focus will be on the patient’s progress in the program, current issues and after-care planning.

Length of stay is determined by a patient’s progress, as well as an assessment by our interdisciplinary treatment team.

Inpatient Mental Health
We offer two acute levels of care, the Short Term Care Facility and the Open-Side, at the West Pavilion at Jefferson Cherry Hill Hospital, a 35-bed inpatient psychiatric unit. Each level offers individually tailored treatment plans for adult patients. The treatment team includes board certified psychiatrists, residents, interns, nurse clinical specialists, RNs, dance, movement and art therapists, social workers and mental health technicians.
