What is the High Risk Breast Program?

Jefferson Health’s expert team created the High Risk Breast Cancer Screening Program to identify patients at high-risk for breast cancer. This screening may help you avoid a cancer diagnosis or employ risk-reducing tactics to help you receive an early diagnosis, often leading to improved health outcomes.

With one in eight women being diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, your breast cancer risk is as important as your blood pressure, cholesterol level, and body mass index. Around 5-10% of breast cancers can be hereditary or passed through families.  A women’s risk of breast cancer depends on personal risk factors and family history.  Many women are not sure of their personal risk for developing breast cancer.

Our multi-disciplinary team – breast surgeons, medical oncologists, advanced practice nurses, genetic counselors and nurse navigators -- provides patients with:

  • In-depth evaluation
  • Risk assessment and management
  • Screenings, education, and preventative treatment
  • Personalized genetic counseling.

The High-Risk Breast Program addresses the concerns of women who have:

  • Personal history of breast cancer
  • High risk benign lesions found in breast biopsy including: LCIS (lobular carcinoma in situ) ADH (atypical ductal hyperplasia)
  • Family history of breast cancer in two or more close relatives (parents, siblings, and children)
  • Family history of breast cancer in more than one generation
  • Male relative with breast cancer
  • Family member who has both breast and ovarian cancers
  • Personal or family history of pancreatic cancer.
